Opalescence take home whitening

Opalescence take home whitening takes a few weeks to deliver results, but is more subtle and lets you treat yourself in the comfort of your own home. If you’d prefer to whiten your teeth more gradually and avoid spending too much time in the dentist’s chair, it’s a good option.

The Teeth Whitening Process

In-office whitening consists of one or more appointments with Dr. Bickel. He will clean your mouth, apply a protective gel to your gums, then apply a whitening compound to your teeth, and activate it with a UV light. This process may be repeated several times, depending on your desired level of whiteness.

Take-home whitening is a bit different. You’ll come into our office, and Dr. Bickel will take impressions of your teeth with dental putty. These will be used to make a set of reusable, custom whitening trays. You’ll come back in a few weeks to pick up your whitening trays and to get a set of whitening products and instructions on how to use them. Then, just follow the instructions to whiten your teeth at home.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?

Teeth whitening can last for anywhere from 1-3 years, depending on how you care for your teeth. Make sure you brush twice a day for two minutes, floss once a day, and see Dr. Bickel for regular six-month teeth cleanings.

In addition, you can take steps to prevent further staining, such as reducing your intake of beverages like wine, coffee, and tea, or drinking them with a straw to prevent contact with your teeth. Brushing with a whitening toothpaste and using whitening mouthwash can also help prevent and reverse minor stain buildup.

If your teeth do develop stains in the future, a touch-up appointment at our office can remove them and keep your teeth bright.

Does Teeth Whitening Hurt?

No. Your teeth may feel a little bit sore or sensitive when undergoing treatment, but you won’t feel any serious pain or discomfort. Once your teeth have been whitened, this sensitivity will go away within a few days.

However, if you already have sensitive teeth, discuss this with Dr. Bickel before your treatment. He may need to adjust your treatment to ensure that you will remain comfortable and free of discomfort while your teeth are whitened.
